Dear Parents:
It’s getting closer to CRCT time and there are a few things that we’d like to share with you as we prepare to take the test.  As you know, the state requires that we take the test in reading, language, and math at the first and second grades.  Their testing will take three days.  The third through fifth graders take the Reading, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies tests.  Their testing will take five days.  Testing for all grades begins Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

For the entire time, April 16 through April 23, 2008, we’d like to ask that you make every effort to have your child at school, on time, every day.  Students may not enter the classroom after testing has begun.  It is so very important that they take the test along with the other students so that they have the same opportunity as the other students to do well.  Please do not make any appointments during those days if you can avoid it, especially in the mornings.  It’s also important to make sure they get a good night’s rest every night during testing.  Have them eat a good breakfast or eat the school breakfast the morning of testing.  We will provide a snack between testing sessions, but it’s important that they get a good start with a healthy breakfast.

On the school website are some strategies for taking the test.  Talk about these basic strategies for the Reading test and the Math strategies with your child.  You may also go on line and practice at home on www.regionm.georgiaoas.org.  It will ask you for a log in and password.  Use as the log in and password the name of your child’s grade.  As an example, you would log in grade1 and enter the password grade1.  This works for all grade levels..  Type it in lower case letters and leave no space between the grade and number.  This will provide some real practice using former test items.  Take advantage of this resource!  If you don’t have a computer at home, take your child to the public library.  They have computers available there.

As you probably already know, a passing score on the Reading portion of the CRCT are required for a student to pass to the next grade at third grade and Reading and Math are required for fifth grade.  A reading score of 800 is required and a math score of 300 is required.  Students who do not pass are required to attend academic summer school and have another opportunity to take the test during the summer so that they can pass and be promoted to the next grade.

We are happy to offer more test-taking strategies for parents in the evening if there is sufficient interest.  The meeting will be scheduled at the school on Thursday, March 27.  A notice will be sent if the meeting is scheduled.  If you will attend a meeting, return this form to your child’s teacher:

I would like more information and I will attend a CRCT meeting. (Please print this form, sign it and return it to school.  The meeting date and time will be announced if enough people respond.)

Basic CRCT Strategies for Reading

1.  Read the answers first, then read the problem or passage.
(This may help you recognize important information.)

2. Determine what the question is asking.
(You can’t find an answer if you don’t know what you’re looking for.)

3. If you don’t know the answer, skip it and come back later.

4. Don’t leave any answers blank!  Make an educated guess, even if
there is no way for you to find the answer.

5. Relax, you have been preparing for this all year.

Extra Math Strategies are:

·       Drawing a diagram or picture

·       Work backwards

·       Guess and check

·       Find a pattern

·       Choose an operation

 Extra Reading Strategies are:

·       Read the question and then, Go find the answer in the passage.

·       Know the vocabulary.

Special Note:  The next “MCSD Lunch Talk” will be Friday, March 23 at 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Columbus Public Library in the CB&T Room at 3000 Macon Road.  The topic presented will be “Your Child and Testing” and the facilitator will be Dr. Carol Bradshaw of the Muscogee County School District.  Parents will be given techniques on how to prepare their child for testing.  Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch or purchase one in the library’s café.  For more information contact Dr. Billy Kendall at 748-2007 or bkendall@mcsdga.net.
